We're really doing this!

At some point last summer Jessica said to me, "I want to bike across the country. Can we do that during 4th year?" Of course my response was "Yes!" and we excitedly extended invitations to many of our bicycling classmates.

Now one must understand this precious gem that is the fourth year of medical school. Not only is it our last chance to try out different medical specialties before making a decision and flying all over the country for residency interviews, it is also designed with some treasured free-time. This is the chance we all yearn for to do that last little (or big) thing before we immerse ourselves in 3+ rigorous years of residency. Many of our classmates are traveling to exotic places, having babies, or getting married. So when our friend Tad excitedly joined our clan, we were ecstatic! But honestly, I wondered if the whole concept would hop back on the shelf of dreams as the three of us realized that we needed to spend these 7 weeks differently.

Amazingly, we're really doing this! We find out on Friday where we are going for residency. After a little celebration with our families and friends, we'll hop in the car with Jessica's uncle Steve and head for San Diego. Steve has ridden this Southern Tier route twice and is generously helping us begin our own adventure. We will certainly appreciate his support for a week as we get in shape on the road. We're aiming to average 70 miles/day...they say we have to come back for graduation :)

Note: we will not be bringing a hammer on this trip.
